Intermediate Certificate Course in Industrial Automation

Duration

  • Duration: 3 Months 
  • Day: Saturday/Sunday 9.30 A.M – 4.30 P.M (7 hours including lunch break and tea breaks)
  • Theoretical discussions and hands-on practicals

Curriculum

Month 1: Fundamentals of Electrical Control & PLC Logic

  • Introduction to electrical systems 
  • Introduction to logic gates, binary systems, and logic gates
  • Practicals with relays and contactors
  • Practice contactor wiring patterns (star-delta, forward-reverse, etc…)
  • Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) – Siemens S7-200
  • Introduction to various programming languages for PLCs
  • Understanding Normally open/close, PNP, NPN differences for inputs
  • Working with inputs and outputs in PLCs using ladder logic
  • Introduction to timers and counters 
  • Practicals using sensors and conveyor

 

Month 2: Diving into other programming languages and motor control

  • Introduction to Function block diagrams with gate systems and networks
  • Discussion into motor classifications
  • Introduction to Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and Pulse Train Outputs (PTO)
  • Control DC motor speed with PWM
  • Dive in to Three Phase Motors and Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) control
  • Learn VFD and motor integration with PLCs and VFD configurations
  • Control AC motor speed with PTO and VFD using a PLC
  • Stepper motor control with stepper motor driver TB6600
  • Control position/number or turns and speed of a stepper motor using PLCs
  • Introduction to AC servo motors
  • Control AC servo motor using a PLC

 

Month 3: Advanced logic and HMIs

  • Introduction to conditional logic using if-else and AND/OR methods in PLCs
  • Introduction to External interrupts 
  • Practicals using Encoders to identify motor speed
  • Introduction to Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) – Touchwin TG765
  • Creating HMI interfaces using software
  • Deep dive in to HMI logic patterns, establishing single source of truth

Month 4: Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems

  • Introduction to concepts of pneumatic and hydraulic actuation
  • Interact with components in these systems
  • Introduction to Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) schematic symbols and how to identify them
  • Practicals with pneumatic actuators solenoids
  • Using PLC logic to control pneumatic actuators
  • Practical with pick and place stacking system

Month 5: PLC expansion modules and analog signals

  • Identifying the limitations of PLCs
  • Available expansion modules for PLCs
  • Introduction to analog signals
  • Get analog input from a potentiometer using an expansion module for a PLC
  • Practicals with simple digital temperature controllers: Fuji PXE Series, Anly AT02B
  • Identify different temperature sensors: PT100, thermocouple
  • Practical: Get temperature readings and control the fan. Preset value using HMI
  • Introduction to load cells for weighing applications.
  • Practical: weigh and display for industrial applications

Month 6: Communication protocols and IoT applications 

  • Discuss need for communication and Serial communication protocols
  • Rs-232 example
  • Using RS-485 for connecting several devices 
  • Communicating using Modbus-RTU for data transmission
  • Practical: Obtain data from a power analyzer and display on HMI
  • Brief introduction to Web development and hosting
  • Introduction to the concept of API interfacing
  • Practical using a PLC to interact with a web interface using HTTP protocols
  • Practical: Home Automation System
